NWU Academic Merit Bursary
The NWU Postgraduate Academic Bursary is supplementary to all other postgraduate bursaries and is awarded for academic
achievement.
Bursary Conditions
- The bursary is available only to postgraduate students who register for a first, prescribed postgraduate course unit. Students registered for occasional studies do not qualify.
- The bursary will be awarded only once in the first year of the postgraduate course unit.
- The Academic Merit Bursary for registered NWU students is automatically calculated and awarded each year. The Academic Merit Bursary for students from other Universities is not calculated and awarded automatically – these students must apply for the bursary on the prescribed form before or on the closing date as specified.
- The bursary amount is repayable if a student fails to comply with any of the conditions, terminates studies or does not complete the course within the prescribed period stipulated for the NWU Postgraduate Bursary Scheme.
- The University reserves the right, should circumstances be justified, to alter the guidelines, conditions and values of the bursary without prior notice to the applicant.
- The bursary will be awarded as follows:
- To qualify applicants must have achieved a minimum average of 75% for all final subjects/modules during the preceding,
- completed degree. Academic records of the previous qualifying degree will be taken into consideration when calculating the
- average. Certificates only are not valid.
- Bursary holders must complete the postgraduate degree within the minimum grace period stipulated by the NWU
- Posgraduate Bursary Scheme.

NWU Masters Bursary
Bursary Conditions
- The bursary is available only to postgraduate students who register for a first, prescribed Masters’ course unit. Students
- registered for occasional studies do not qualify.
- Application for the bursary must be done annually on the prescribed application form.
- Masters students are allowed to receive bursaries from one or more sources. There is no limitation on the amount of the
- Masters bursary.
- The bursary amount is repayable if a student fails to comply with any of the conditions, terminates studies or does not
- complete the course within the prescribed period.
- The University reserves the right, should circumstances be justified, to alter the guidelines, conditions and values of the
- bursary without prior notice to the applicant.
- The bursary will be awarded as follows:
- To qualify applicants must have achieved an average of at least 60% for all modules/subjects during the preceding,
- completed Honours degree. Students who have obtained a four-year B-degree in BIng, BPharm, MMus or BArt et Science
- in Town and Regional Planning also qualify. Academic records of the previous completed degree must be attached.
- Certificates only is not valid.
- Part-time students and working students may apply for a 50% allocation of the NWU postgraduate bursary. Working
- students are defined as students who work for an employer, earning a salary and where work is the main activity.
- The bursary is valid for two (2) years only. R20 200 per year will be awarded for full time students - the total bursary
- value over 2 years is R40 400.
- All students from the SECOND YEAR of the degree apply for the Masters Progress Bursary: For the Progress Bursary the
- Progress Report (see Addendum A - completed by the study leader) must be submitted with the application. This report
- serves as a recommendation of academic progress. If the student didn’t previously received a NWU Masters Bursary the
- student must attach the academic script of the preceding qualifying degree to verify the average of 60%. Incomplete
- applications are invalid and may lead to disapproval of the application.
- If a Masters student, after completing the degree, immediately enrolls for Doctoral studies, R20 200 will be carried over to
- the first year of Doctoral studies. If the student does not enroll for Doctoral studies the bursary value remains only R20 200.
- Bursary holders must complete the Masters degree within a minimum grace period of three (3) years.

Postgraduate FacultyBursary
Application process
- Eligible and interested postgraduate students registered in the Faculty of Theology should submit the following documentation as part of the application process
- A letter (1 page maximum) in which you indicate that you apply for the bursary. The following information should be noted in the letter: initials, surname, name of study leader / promoter (or potential study leader or promoter), the qualification you are enrolled for / plan to enrol for, acknowledgement that the student is enrolled as a full time student, the working title of the MA or PhD project, the year in which the study is and a motivation for the application.
- Your research proposal (the most recent version of the proposal with an indication if the proposal was already accepted by the Committee for Advanced Degrees) or a concept proposal (maximum of 3 pages with information about the working title of the study, a brief paragraph that contextualised the problem of the study, the problem that the study wants to focus on, the research questions and methods you plan to use to get information to answer the research questions and a BRIEF and SELECTED bibliography).

The following conditions apply:
- You have to register for your postgraduate degree within the Faculty of Theology.
- You have to make substantive progress with your research proposal or chapters of your dissertation or thesis during the year of registration for which the bursary is awarded, to the satisfaction of your study leader or promoter.
- You have to contribute to the writing of 1 article under supervision of your study leader or promoter during the said the year of registration.
- The continuation of the bursary, to a maximum of two years for a masters degree and four years for a doctoral degree, is dependent upon the availability of NWU funding, and on the condition that you make satisfactory progress with your postgraduate study, to the satisfaction of the Faculty Bursary Committee based on the recommendation of your supervisor or promoter.
- If you do not make progress to the satisfaction of your study leader or promoter, the bursary is not extended to the next year.
- If you do not finish your degree within the prescribed period, the bursary will be converted into a loan that you have to pay back.
Payment of the bursary
- The bursary money is paid into your student account and you class fees and other NWU fees are first paid from the bursary money.
- If some bursary money remains in the student account after NWU accounts were paid, a student can apply via the NWU approved process prescribed by academic administration for the payment of bursary money to pay for costs related to the study (e.g. the printing of the dissertation or thesis; language editing; statistical consultation fees; expenditures related to the gathering and collection of data) or your sustenance as a student (e.g. rent money, food, transport).
- The bursary is paid in four equal segments:
- After receipt of proof of registration;
- July;
- October
- After receipt of progress report from your promoter to the Faculty Bursary Committee in October. You will be allowed to apply for your Bursary renewal upon satisfactory progress.
- Applications for the next year take in November for the following year.
Arrangements for the administration of the bursary
- The bursary is administrated by the Faculty Bursary Administrator.
