Guidelines

A short research motivation of about 1000 to 2000 words must accompany the application form together with all the necessary documentation. This proposal must cover the topic suggested for research and must clearly state the research problem. A short explanatory back ground must be given explaining why the specific topic is of importance. Subject references must comply with the accepted NWU - style (Harvard method).

Please note:

  • All international students must pay the full amount for their proposed study and relevant costs in advance before registration can be finalised.
  • Upon receipt of all the relevant documents, your application will be evaluated by the relevant faculty. Please note that it can take up to six months to process an application, however, postgraduate registrations are accepted up to the end of March of each year. The academic year at the North-West University runs from January to December.
  • All prospective international students must report to the International Office of the North-West University upon arrival on campus for assistance regarding study permits and accommodation. Please submit the following when reporting to the International Office:
    • A sworn statement or bank guarantee must be submitted to ensure that you have access to the necessary finances that will enable you to undertake your studies and to cover your living expenses for the full duration of your studies;
    • Proof of medical cover for the duration of your studies at the North-West University. The International Office will provide assistance if needed.

    5. A certificate of proof of English proficiency:
      • Prospective students from non-English speaking countries must submit a certificate of English language proficiency, either the TOEFL score sheet or results of the University of Cambridge International English Language Testing System. Students who completed their studies through an English-medium institution prior to submitting their application may apply in writing for exemption from the TOEFL test. NWU Masters

Bursary Conditions


1. The bursary is available only to postgraduate students who register for a first, prescribed Masters’ course unit. Students registered for occasional studies do not qualify.
2. Application for the bursary must be done annually on the prescribed application form before or on 31 March 2018.
3. Masters students are allowed to receive bursaries from one or more sources. There is no limitation on the amount of the Masters bursary.
4. Students from other universities must attach an academic record of the preceding qualifying degree.
5. The bursary amount is repayable if a student fails to comply with any of the conditions, terminates studies or does not complete the course within the prescribed period.
6. The University reserves the right, should circumstances be justified, to alter the guidelines, conditions and values of the bursary without prior notice to the applicant.
7. The bursary will be awarded as follows:
7.1 To qualify applicants must have achieved an average of at least 60% for all modules/subjects during the preceding, completed Honours degree. Students who have obtained a four-year B-degree in BIng, BPharm, MMus or BArt et Science in Town and Regional Planning also qualify. Academic records of the previous completed degree must be attached. Certificates only is not valid.
7.2 Part-time students and working students may apply for a 50% allocation of the NWU postgraduate bursary (working students are defined as students who work for an employer, earning a salary and where work is the main activity).
7.3 The bursary is valid for two (2) years only. R20 200 per year will be awarded for full time students - the total bursary value over 2 years is R40 400.
7.4 All students from the SECOND YEAR of the degree apply for the Masters Progress Bursary: For the Progress Bursary the prescribed Progress Report, completed by the study leader, must be attached to the application. This report serves as a recommendation of academic progress. If the student didn’t previously received a NWU Masters Bursary the student must attach the academic script of the preceding qualifying degree also to verify the average of 60%. Incomplete applications do not qualify.
7.5 If a Masters student, after completing the degree, immediately enrolls for Doctoral studies, R20 200 will be carried over to the first year of Doctoral studies. If the student does not enroll for Doctoral studies the bursary value remains only R20 200.
7.6 Bursary holders must complete the Masters degree within a minimum grace period of three (3) years.

5. The University reserves the right, should circumstances be justified, to alter the guidelines, conditions and values of the bursary without prior notice to the applicant.
6. The bursary will be awarded as follows:
6.1 To qualify applicants must have achieved an average of at least 60% for all modules/subjects during the preceding, completed Masters' degree. Academic records of the previous completed degree must be attached – certificates of degree only is not acceptable.
6.2 Part-time students and working students may apply for a 50% allocation of the NWU postgraduate bursary (Working students are defined as students who work for an employer, earning a salary and where work is the main activity).
6.3 The bursary is valid for three (3) years only. R24 000 per year will be awarded for full time students - the total bursary value over 2 years is R72 000.
